Old Boys Visit

Recently on a discussion on 50 years of Merdeka, Mister Toh Weng Cheong described his experience in the Merdeka Stadium on 31st August 1957. This prompted Dato Lee to suggest asking very senior MBS boys to recall the event 50 years ago.

One of the names he mentioned is Lionel Jayatilaka. I was in the MBSOBA premises about a week ago, can’t recall exact date and happened to bump into some relics form MBS, among them Lionel Jayatilaka. I recall his brother Rodney, form 5 in 1963.

From Left:
Lionel Jayatilaka, Dato’ Lee Tak Lum, Willie, Phang Yat Hoong

We all know Dato Lee, the chairman of the school building fund. Willie does not yet ring a bell.

Phang Yat Hoong was a athlete in his time in school and still holds a few records. Then again, no one will break his record of the 100 yards dash as that event no longer exists. His name is still listed on one of the plaques in the school hall.

  3. Lionel’s brother, Rodney was my classmate in secondary school. His sister, Bridget (that’s the spelling), was my classmate in 6th Form. Wonder whether they are on the Loop or not. Haven’t seen them since we left school.

  4. Hmmm,

Willie worked in TNB for years. Can he supply electricity to ring your bell ?

Wow, these old boys were kicking football in the school field when I was not even an ovum in my mother.

  5. Mr. Moderator,

Did the old boys have any comments on our premises?

Their conversation centred on the school. Lionel talked about going to Kirby in England for teachers’ training and coming back to serve. Yat Hoong kept on rattling about his athletic performance and the friendly rivalry among his peers.
